Attic Ventilators: A Smart Move?

Powered attic ventilators (PAVs) are highly promoted by many contractors and home improvement stores. After all, they seem logical – expel the hot attic air and cooler air will move in to replace it. In theory, this should reduce the load on your air conditioning system and reduce summertime cooling expenses.

But this isn't the whole story. PAVs, in many cases, can actually increase the load on your A/C system and introduce new problems, such as mold and moisture build-up. How does this happen?

All of the air the PAV expels from the attic must be replaced. People assume this air comes from outside the home. However, many homes suffer from poor insulation and air duct leakage problems. This results in the PAV sucking cooled air from inside the home itself – air that you've already paid to cool. The PAV also consumes a fair amount of electricity on its own.

There are scenarios where a PAV might be a good idea, but in most cases, better solutions exist. Start with the basics. The first step is to obtain a whole-home energy audit to uncover any fundamental problems from which your home may be suffering.

Which brand should I choose?

One of the most common questions we hear is, "What brand of equipment is best?" Well, it's time to let you in on a secret...

Nearly all brands utilize the same major internal components. The only reason you've heard more about some brands is because they've spent a lot of money making sure you know about them. Does this make them the better choice? Not necessarily.

By far, the more important considerations are product warranties and quality of installation. Brand names mean little if they don't stand behind their products. The best equipment in the world can be crippled by a bad installation.

At Comfort Control, Inc. we utilize top-quality equipment backed by the best warranties in the industry. Our extensive experience ensures your equipment is installed the right way, the first time. We wouldn't ask our customers to accept anything less. Call to learn more.

Did you know?

According to the Department of Energy, the average residential duct system loses between 20 and 40 percent of the heating or cooling output capacity of the furnace, air conditioner or heat pump due to duct leakage.

Comfort Control, Inc. includes duct sealing with every new installation, FREE.
